Biography
Lynette Warren tells a story about a time when it was snowing and she wanted to go to school with her childhood friend Alberta. Lynette was about 5 years old. Her mother said she couldn't go because the snow was too deep. She was very disappointed. George asked her what was wrong and she told him, so he picked her up and put her on his shoulders and walked her over to Alberta's house so they could be in school. Lynette remembers being up so high on George's shoulders, and there were no other marks on the snow. The two of them were the first out and all was white and wonderful. "Nanny" (Ema Warren Edwards) tells of the time when George was chopping wood and accidently cut off the top of his toes on one foot. George had to stay in bed, but he wanted to "bury" his toes. So he got Ema to bury the toes. Several days later he wanted to see his toes so he had Ema go out and dig up the toes and bring them to him! Ema also tells of the time when George came home on leave just prior to being shipped over to France. The family had gotten a "Car"! George wanted to drive the car and asked his mother if he could go for a ride. "Ginny" could never say no to George, but she wasn't sure whether he could drive. He, of course, told her he had learned how to drive during boot camp. She wasn't convinced, but she still let him drive under one condition -- He had to take his sister Ema along. You see Ema knew how to drive! Ema tells of how they went off driving "very fast" over the dirt roads in Alamance County and the fact that this was the first time George had ever been behind a wheel!
